"The Census and Statistics Act of 1905 provides for taking a general census of Canada in 1911 and every tenth year thereafter, and for a census of population and agriculture in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1906 and every tenth year thereafter. An Office established by authority of the Act, called the Census and Statistics Office, is required to take each census under the direction of the Minister of Agriculture, according to forms and instructions approved by the Minister and on a date in the month of June to be fixed by the Governor in Council. The first census of the three Northwest provinces under the provisions of this Act was taken for the date of June 24, 1906, and the results are embodied in the tables of this report,."--p. ix.
