The James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement, signed on November 11, 1975 by the Inuit of northern Québec, the James Bay Cree, the governments of Québec and Canada, the James Bay Development Corporation, the James Bay Energy Corporation and Hydro-Quebec has come to be regarded as the first modern-day comprehensive aboriginal land claims agreement. While it was essentially an out-of-court settlement designed to resolve conflicts arising from the construction of the James Bay Hydro-electric Development Project, it became a model for future federal land claims policy and consequently future agreements.
