“On April 6, 1993 the Teslin Tlingit First Nation expressed interest in participating in the Royal Commission study on Aboriginal Peoples. The following month of that year, the Teslin Tlingit First Nation agreed to participate in the research project on Aboriginal Self-Government and Judicial Systems with the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The purpose of this study is for the following: to inform other governments (including other First Nations), policy makers, the Royal Commission, and the public, on issues and matters of significance to Aboriginal people in Canada and the needs and aspirations of the Teslin Tlingit concerning self-governance; to make recommendations that would help to improve the lives of Aboriginal people in Canada and the Teslin Tlingit by providing information that will assist Aboriginal people in Canada and the Teslin Tlingit in determining their vision of future governance and their process of self-determination; and to assist the Royal Commission by contributing to the holistic understanding of emerging models of Aboriginal governments in Canada"--Intro., p. 1-1.
