Wastewater heat recovery / by Winston MacKelvie.: NH18-1/386-1997E-PDF
“This report is on Wastewater Heat Recovery. More specifically, it is a report on the results of monitoring wastewater heat recovery from an ordinary residential building's drain pipe using a new technology invented by the author called the DrainGain System. The work was partially funded by a grant from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. The results show success was achieved - heat recovery at times reached 50%. Compared to the current practice of 100% total loss of wastewater heat to the sewer, the DrainGain System was infinitely better. The DrainGain System was installed in a private residence. A worst case scenario was chosen; that is, an existing home with standard, all-in-one-drain plumbing. To prove the adaptability of DrainGain, the existing plumbing was used as found. In order to ensure that ordinary water use profiles were maintained during the monitoring, no special instructions were issued to the family. The System comprises three separate inventions. One is a heat exchanger to transfer waste heat to fresh water, the second is a separator that excludes large solids from the exchanger, and the third a process to prevent fouling of the exchanger's tubing. There are no moving parts and no power is needed for this operation"--Executive summary, p. 2.
