520 | |a"Pursuant to sections 68 and 74 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) (Canada 1999), the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and the Minister of Health conduct screening assessments of substances to determine whether these substances present or may present a risk to the environment or to human health. A key element of the Government of Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) is the Petroleum Sector Stream Approach (PSSA), which involves the assessment of approximately 160 petroleum substances that are considered high priorities for action. This screening assessment addresses two substances. These liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs) were identified as priorities for assessment, as they met the categorization criteria under section 73 of CEPA and/or were considered a priority based on human health concerns. These substances were included in the PSSA because they are related to the petroleum sector and are complex mixtures. This screening assessment includes consideration of information on chemical properties, environmental fate, hazards, uses and exposure, including additional information submitted by stakeholders. Relevant data were identified up to February 2014. Empirical data from key studies as well as some results from models were used to reach conclusions. When available and relevant, information presented in assessments from other jurisdictions was considered"--Introd., p. 1, 2. |
