"Carbonation is a process that reduces the natural alkalinity of concrete. Cement hydrates in the concrete react with atmospheric carbon dioxide to produce calcium carbonates. Advanced carbonation can induce corrosion of the reinforcing steel in areinforced concrete structure which can in turn lead to fracture formation in concrete and structural distress. Coatings and sealers have been found to slow or prevent the progress of carbonation in European laboratory tests. This field study initiated testing of certain coatings/sealers to determine their effect on the rate of carbonation and is monitoring their performance in a Canadian climate"--Abstract, p. ii.
