"Since 1979, the Science Council has been studying the effects of computers and related technologies on industry, education, the workforce and society in general. ... a workshop was convened by Council on 20 and 21 January 1983. The Ottawa workshop had the effect of acting as a catalyst to bring together members of the AI community from all parts of Canada. For two days, some 60 participants from across the country met in Ottawa to discuss the current state of AI research and consider policies for future development. Those attending included research workers from university, industrial and government laboratories as well as industrialists, policy-makers and venture capitalists"--p. 5.
