5200 |a"An experimental contour trench system for subsurface disposal of septic tank effluent from a group of dwellings was installed at Port Maitland in southwestern Nova Scotia in 1982, in order to address the problem of failing individual septic systems in the community. The Port Maitland system was originally monitored between 1982 to 1984. The site was revisited and monitored from May of 1989 to June of 1990 to assess the long-term hydraulic and treatment performance of the system. Piezometer nests remaining from the original study were re-used. Samples were collected, and groundwater depths observed on seven occasions. Analyses were conducted for bacteriological and chemical parameters. The findings show that chemical concentrations of contaminants were reduced to background levels within 9m of the contour trench. There was no apparent increase in the transport distance between 1984 and 1990 by the Centre for Water Resources Studies at the Technical University of Nova Scotia in a study conducted for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, to assess the long-term hydraulic and treatment performance of the system"--Abstract.
