Three main research areas are emphasized. First, a review of available data sources on the characteristics and experiences of battered women identifies some of their needs in second-stage shelters. Then the focus turns to issues involved in translating these needs into concrete expressions of design, location, service provision, and shelter management and organization. Second-stage shelters in operation in Canada were contacted and asked to describe how they approached these issues.
