"The main purpose of using the shapefile format is to provide for transferring National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) data via a simple format that makes it easy to import NTDB graphics and attributes (nongraphic) into ArcView® software. The format allows users to read data directly if their geographic information system (GIS) or computer-assisted design (CAD) system can read data in the shapefile format."--Context.
