"This document was designed for use in CMHC's Healthy Housing Design Competition. It is broken down into three sections. Section I is an introduction to the competition and describes CMHCs perspective on sustainable development. Section II of the booklet provides background information on many aspects of sustainable housing. The subsections are based on the elements which must be considered and addressed in the development of designs for healthy housing, including: occupant health; energy efficiency; resource efficiency; environmental responsiblity; affordability and economic viability. A discussion of the issues and background information is provided on each topic together with a description of state-of-the-art developments in housing design and technology.
