520 |a"The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs has approximately 3,300 miles of roads under its jurisdiction in the Yukon and Northwest Territories combined. In addition, there are a number of winter roads and approximately 600 miles of initial access roads. As noted in the report "Northern Roads Task Force - November 1971", produced by the Northern Roads Task Force, the emphasis in future road program development is shifting from the construction of new roads to the upgrading of existing road. Greater emphasis is therefore required on establishment of technical priorities for reconstruction of the northern roads. These technical priorities, in addition to establishing priorities for reconstruction, should provide a foundation for establishing long range maintenance programs. The purpose of this report is to present a priority rating system for the road system in the Yukon and Northwest Territories"--Introduction.
