5200 |a"In June 1983 the Government of Canada established the Special Committee on Pornography and Prostitution to report to the Minister of Justice. The Committee was asked to study the problems associated with pornography and prostitution and to carry out a program of socio-legal research in support of our work. Our specific terms of reference were 1. to consider the problems of access to pornography, its effects and what is considered to be pornographic in Canada; 2. to consider prostitution in Canada with particular reference to loitering and street soliciting for prostitution, the operation of bawdy houses, living off the avails of prostitution, the exploitation of prostitutes and the law relating to these matters; 3. to ascertain public views on ways and means to deal with these probllems by inviting submissions from concerned groups and citizens and by conducting meetings in major centres across the country; 4. to consider the experience and attempts to deal with these problesm in other countries, including the U.S., European Economic Community and selected Commonwealth countries such as Australia and New Zealand; 5. to consider alternatives, report findings and recommend solutions to the problems associated with pornography and prostitution in Canada"--p. 5-6.
