"This compilation selects the main features of the major study now in process of production. Supporting data and discussions of computation of rates is omitted for purposes of avoiding confusion, as are also all detailed tables. These can be studied in detail in the major report. Accurate assessment of Indian vital statistics is not possible until two years after the year under study because of difficulties in collecting full data and checking their accuracy. Some 15% of births are apparently not registered in the year of birth and the proportion seems to be rising."--Foreword.
