520 |a"This is an experimental issue of a Language Arts program designed for pupils attending the Churchill Vocational Centre, Fort Churchill, Manitoba. The Centre provides pre-vocational courses for Eskimo and Indian youth who live in the Keewatin and Baffin Island regions of the Northwest Territories and in Arctic Quebec. The course programs are designed to prepare pupils for learning to live and work with others to earn a livelihood either in the northland or in the provinces. The objective of the Curriculum Guide is to spell out in specific terms these essential learnings needed for pupils to have a chance to succeed in the major Canadian culture. An integral part of the Language Arts program is the special projects in which topics of a vocational class are studied from an academic point of view. These projects are conducted by the English teacher in consultation with vocational teachers. Each project is planned and designed jointly by the two teachers concerned. It is hoped that each year teachers will develop further projects of a mutually-supportive nature so that in a few years we shall have formed the basis of a sound program of vocational education in the real sense of the term"--Foreword.
