"Eleanor Island National Wildlife Area (NWA) is a small island in southern Lake Muskoka, central Ontario. It is composed of solid granite outcroppings around the perimeterand a mix of deciduous and coniferous forest in the interior. Eleanor Island was protected as a municipal bird sanctuary before being transferred to Environment and Climate Change Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service. In 1971, it was designated a Migratory Bird Sanctuary (MBS) to protect colonial nesting waterbirds. In 1978, Eleanor Island was designated an NWA to afford greater protection for colonial nesting waterbirds and their habitat, and to serve as a site for long-term research."
