Although old age is commonly perceived as being symonomous with poverty and the lack of physical and mental capability the reality is quite different. Many older Canadians have acquired a substantial financial asset over their working lives - the equity in their homes. Also, the elderly have been increasingly able to live active and largely independent lives. Chronic disease, frailty and loneliness may affect their ability to maintain their existing homes but, in most cases, does not necessitate a move to an institution"--Abstract.
