Failure of concrete foundations in Atlantic Canada housing in the 1980's : a report prepared for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation / prepared by Richard C. Hale.: NH17-150/1988E-PDF

"The objective of this research project was to study the failure in concrete foundations of housing constructed in Atlantic Canada during the 1980's. Thirty housing units in Nova Scotia having water intrusions or structural problems due to cracking of the concrete foundation walls and/or basement floor slab, were inspected and analyzed. The consultant describes: (1) the causes of failures in concrete foundations; (2) the type and cost of remedies; (3) the effectiveness of the repairs; and (4) what steps could be taken during construction to limit and control cracking and prevent water and foundation drainage. The inspections did not reveal any poor concrete nor major quality differences which might be associated with concrete cracking."
