520 |a"Vocational education is considered a prime means of helping the Canadian Eskimo adjust to the pace of economic and social change and participate in a meaningful way in the developments occurring in Northern Canada. This study is concerned with a program of prevocational education for Eskimo youth from 32 settlements in the Canadian Eastern Arctic who attended a residential school operated by the federal government's Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The students were 15 to 20 years old, at least two years behind the usual age-grade placement, represented all levels of ability, and were enrolled in a three-year program of vocational training and academic upgrading. To achieve effective procedures for guiding the individual growth of students, a diagnostic device was developed and validated to provide a guide for teachers' observations"--p. [i].
