520 |a"A major concern in Canada today is the rising public expenditure on health care. Hospitals are the most costly sector in the health care delivery system, representing just under 50% of total health expenditures in 1975. In the mid-1970's, the respective capital (excluding land) and operating costs were $50,000 per bed and $125 per patient-day. Furthermore, with more than four million hospital admissions each year, at an average of almost 11 days, hospital services in 1975 amounted to $5.3 billion or 3.3% of G.N.P. It is important, therefore, to gain some appreciation of how these costs might change in the future."--Preface, p. [3].
