Macrozooplankton abundances on the Scotian Shelf using acoustic backscatter and direct sampling methodologies / by N.A. Cochrane, D.D. Sameoto, and M.K. Kennedy.: Fs97-6/3238E-PDF

"Quantitative measures of Nova Scotian Shelf macrozooplankton abundance, dominated by the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica, were examined for the period 1961 – 2011. Main results included: 1) Echosounder and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) backscatter abundances in Emerald Basin generally rising from the mid-1980s, peaking in 1994-95, while continuing to rise on the broader eastern and western shelf areas prior to a widespread, multi-year population crash in fall 2001. 2) Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) evidence of a long-term dip in larval euphausiid abundances the late 1990s. 3) Ring net and BIONESS multi-net euphausiid abundances sufficiently sparse and scattered to preclude long term trend delineation 4) Suggestive positive correlations between Emerald Basin column backscatter and both deep Basin temperatures and the North Atlantic Oscillation index. An extended discussion of acoustic methodologies is included. Avenues for further investigation are proposed."--Abstract, p. vi.
