5200 |a"Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are considered an emerging issue in municipal wastewater treatment in both Europe and North America ... In 2002 Enviromnent Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE), and the City of Toronto embarked on a large-scale collaborative wastewater research study to generate information for development of risk, management strategies to control the release of PPCPS into the Canadian environment. This study included several facets: development of analytical methods to detect PPCPS in wastewater and sludge; surveys of PPCPS in treatment plant influents, effluents, and sludges; comparison of conventional activated sludge (CAS) and innovative wastewater treatment processes for PPCP removal from wastewater; and controlled bench-scale studies. As of 2006 experimental work has been completed and data analysis is in progress. This paper is intended to provide an overview of the scope and results of each facet in this collaborative research study to municipal wastewater managers, consultants, and other members of the wastewater industry"--Introd., p. 1-2.
