520 | 3 |a"Three decades ago, blooms of Cladophora sp. were common along the shores of Lakes Erie, Ontario, Michigan and Huron. Links to excess inputs of phosphorus to these lakes were established and phosphorus (P) abatement strategies imposed by the 1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement successfully reduced bloom occurrences. In the recent years, excessive growth of Cladophora has once again become a common feature of the shorescapes of these lakes even while the P control target concentrations for pelagic waters are being met. In this paper, our current state of knowledge of the taxonomy, morphology, biology and general ecology of Cladophora is reviewed, and the possible causal links to the current resurgence of Cladophora algal blooms in the Great Lakes is discussed, specifically, in regards to the invasion of exotic species, climate change and population growth"--Abstract, p. 3-4. |
