Analysis of tidal currents in Douglas Channel / by Alexander B. Rabinovich, Maxim V. Krassovski and Charles Hannah.: Fs97-18/320E-PDF
"Kitimat Port and the associated fjord system connecting it via the Hecate Strait to the Pacific Ocean is a major shipping route. Large tides and strong currents make this an important regime to understand for the World Class Tanker Safety Program. Three years of hydrodynamic data from 2013 to 2016 were collected at two moorings approximately 30 km apart in the Douglas Channel. Spectral and harmonic analysis of the measured currents has shown that throughout the water column the predominant current frequencies are semidiurnal tidal oscillations. There is a slight increase in the magnitude upstream and, as expected in a semi enclosed waterway, they have the character of a standing wave. In the upper 25 m the tidal currents are modulated by low frequency wind and density flows, resulting in considerable seasonal and interannual variability. Incorporating these drivers into tidal forecasts in this regime is challenging”--Abstract, p. iv.
