520 | |a“To reach the goal of protecting 10% of Canada’s coastal and marine areas by 2020, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), working with Parks Canada (PC), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Provincial/Territorial/Indigenous governments, and various stakeholders and Indigenous groups, is leading a process for the creation of a national network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Shelves Bioregion is one of five priority bioregions within Canada that have been identified for MPA network development. The primary national goal of the network will be to provide long-term protection of marine biodiversity, ecosystem function, and special natural features. Under this goal, and following the national guidance on setting objectives for MPA networks, Oceans Program, NL Region has drafted Strategic Objectives (SOs) for the NL Shelves Bioregion which outline what the MPA network aims to achieve. Associated with each SO, ecological features (e.g., species, habitats) have been identified as Conservation Priorities (CPs) that the network will aim to protect. DFO Science has been asked to provide advice on design strategies for these CPs. Design strategies must identify: the type of area or specific ecological feature to be conserved; and the related conservation target, which indicates how much of the area or feature should be captured in the MPA network"--Introd., p. 3. |
