520 |a“The following price indexes for commodity exports and imports are a combination of unit valuation series from trade statistics and specified price series obtained from existing wholesale and retail records. Unit valuations were obtained by dividing quantities into values for those items of the trade statistics that showed a standardized quantity unit, sufficiently well defined to prevent changes in physical content or description from entering into and spoiling the price record. One of the most important uses of these indexes will be to derive quantum comparisons by dividing them into trade values or indexes of trade values. These price indexes will be improved in due course, as the refinement of the trade classification goes forward and as new price sources, such as are contemplated for capital equipment items, are obtained”--p. 1, 2.
