"The House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development (the Committee) travelled to Poland, Latvia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan in January 2017. The objective of the mission was to gather first-hand information for the Committee’s study of Canada’s engagement in Eastern Europe and Central Asia 25 years after the end of the Cold War. Following this fact-finding mission, the Committee held six meetings in Ottawa to supplement its findings and to prepare a concise report. This report presents the Committee’s main findings and makes 10 recommendations aimed at strengthening Canada’s engagement in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and specifically with Poland, Latvia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. The report is structured around four thematic areas which the Committee believes merit greater focus as priority foreign policy areas: promoting regional stability and mutual trust; supporting democratic consolidation; expanding commercial ties; and ensuring a comprehensive approach to Canadian engagement.
