520 | 0 |a"Eurasian watermilfoil is a nuisance aquatic plant which has invaded many lakes and rivers in Canada. Mechanical harvestingis generally agreed to be the most ecologically sound control method but is criticized because multiple harvests may be required each growing season and non long-term effect on regrowth may be apparent. Environment Canada's research on mechanical harvesting of milfoil examined the short-term effects of cutting to illustrate how to make a harvesting program as efficient as possible and to determine if harvesting stressed the plant. The short-term efficacy of harvesting was dramatically influenced by the timing of the cut in 19 harvesting scenarios examined. A June/August or June/September double cut would appear to be the most desirable scenario with very little advantage in a triple cut"--Managememt perspective. |
