The revision is the first major updating of the industries and commodities represented in the indexes and features the following changes: the introduction of the year 1961 as the time and weight base periods for the indexes, replacing the 1956 base; the adoption of the 1960 standard classification of industries and the corresponding definition and classification of establishments within them, in place of the 1948 Standard Industrial Classification; and an expansion in the number of commodity indexes, within the industry indexes, available to users.
