"The Federal Government has a general responsibility with respect to Indians as a result of Section 91 of the British North American Act which gives Canada legislative jurisdiction over Indians and lands reserved for Indians. Section 88 of the Indian Act, however, provides that subject to the terms of any Treaty or any other Act of Parliament, all provincial laws of general application should apply to Indians in the province except to the extent they are inconsistent with the Indian Act"--Social assistance.
