"Canada is facing the most serious agricultural crisis in its history and unless action is taken quickly, this country will lose a major portion of its agricultural capability. The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has travelled extensively in Canada examining the issue of "soil degradation", a problem which is already costing Canadian farmers more than $1 billion per year in farm income. It has determined that we are clearly in danger of squandering the very soil resource on which our agricultural industry depends.
