520 |a"The applications for statistical methods are discussed in the context of the complementary roles of laboratory experiments and field studies in establishing cause and effect and explaining environmental significance. The continuity of the steps from the design of the study to the analysis of the results and the importance of the use of statistical methods in study design are emphasized. The techniques of design and methods of analysis are discussed for three types of studies, showing how the degree of control affects the statistical methods and the strength of the conclusions. Examples drawn from field studies of benthic invertebrates are used to illustrate the use of random sampling in field studies and to give some methods of statistical analysis suitable for observational studies, A review of this very broad topic was not attempted. Rather, statistical principles, of use in many types of studies, were identified and discussed"--Abstract, A-i.
