Formic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is found in plants. It is also produced through microbial activity in the environment, and it is produced in the atmosphere. In Canada, sources of formic acid and formates are the result of industrial activities. As a result of this assessment, the Government of Canada concluded that these substances are not harmful to human health at current levels of exposure.
