5203 |a“Concerns for beluga in eastern Hudson Bay and Ungava Bay led to their designation as ‘Endangered’ by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). This led to more stringent management measures, including complete closures to hunting of beluga whales in eastern Hudson Bay and Ungava Bay in some years and directing more of the harvest to Hudson Strait. In recent years, the population appears to have stabilized. The signing of the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement (NILCA) transferred co-management responsibility to the Nunavik Marine Region Wildlife Board (NMRWB) which was established under the agreement. The current management plan was established for a three year period and will be renewed in 2017. The Total Allowable Take of the management plan is based on the objective that the probability of a harvest causing a decline in the stock does not exceed 50%. This study presents the abundance indices obtained from systematic line-transect aerial surveys conducted during summer 2015 in James Bay and eastern Hudson Bay. These abundance estimates will be used as part of the science advice feeding into the new management plan"--Introd., p. 1.
