COPE became a regional affiliate of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada whose claim entitled "Nunavut" was submitted but subsequently withdrawn in September of 1976. Because of the pressure of an impending decision regarding northern pipelines which might affect this area, COPE announced on December 14, 1976 that it wished to proceed with its own claim.
