"Because of their private, informal nature, these new forms of union are subject to no registration process that would mark the beginning or end, as is the case with legal marriages. We thus cannot study their formation, termination or duration accurately without using retrospective or longitudinal surveys on the matrimonial history of respondents (and survey data are not generally as accurate as registration data). We can, however, easily measure the impact they have had on legal marriage, and this is the purpose of this study"--Introduction.
