Metabolism of trialkyllead and dialkyllead compounds by a freshwater alga, Ankistrodesmus falcatus / P.T.S. Wong ... [et al.].En13-5/86-178-1E-PDF

"A freshwater alga, Ankistrodesmus falcatus, exposed to solutions of trialkyllead, dialkyllead and lead (II) compounds (1 mg/L), was found to accumulate these compounds with concentration factors of 100, 2000, and 20,000 respectively. Incubation of the alga in trimethyllead and dimethyllead over a long period (28 days) revealed the ability of the organism to metabolize these compounds. The metabolic processes for trimethyllead follow adealkylation sequence with the formation of dimethyllead and lead(II). In the case of dimethyllead, the alga was found notonly to accumulate dimethyllead, but also to produce significant amounts of trimethyllead and lead (II). Neither chemical disproportionation reactions nor photo-decomposition can account for the quantities of these compounds produced. The results suggest that algae can play an important role in the cycling of organic lead compounds in aquatic ecosystems"--Exec. summary.
