Often they are the most energetic component of water motion and because they are associated with large vertical shears supported by the stably stratified layers, they may modify, through shear-generated turbulence, the very stratification they depend on. ... This paper focusses on a singlular feature of the Central Basin current records, the occurrence of a marked maximum of inertial frequency motion in July. Just above the seasonal thermocline. After review of the relevant theory for the generation of inertial frequency motion, the authors propose a simple model that extends Ekman theory to the case of surface wind forcing and subsurface forcing by the pressure gradients (or surface slope) due to wind set-up"--Exec. summary.</marc:subfield>
