"Canada has made domestic and international commitments to establish a national network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), including a commitment to protect 5% of coastal and marine areas by 2017 and at least 10% by 2020. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), along with federal and provincial partners, is leading the development of a national MPA network on behalf of the Government of Canada. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Maritimes Region, is leading the development of a MPA network plan for the Scotian Shelf Bioregion, which, for planning purposes, corresponds to the current DFO Maritimes Region boundary"--Context, p.
