"In 1991, the first simultaneous North America-wide census of the Piping Plover Charadrius melodus was conducted. The North American population was estimated to comprise 5484 adults, the largest estimate ever made. In Canada, 1948 adult plovers were counted-comprising 36% of the entire North American Piping Plover population-including at least 824 pairs"--Abstract.
