This bay is the site of a winter harbour for drillships and proposed location for a major year-round· support base for oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort Sea. The 1991 surveys represented the continuation of a long-term monitoring study of birds in McKinley Bay and Hutchison Bay, a nearby area used as a control.
