"In 2012, a Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel published a seminal report assessing the state of Canada’s marine biodiversity. The report concluded that Canada’s marine environment was threatened and its biodiversity was at risk. The continued decline of many fish stocks has had an impact on the resilience of marine ecosystems, as well as on food security, economic development, and the social welfare of coastal communities"--p. 7.
