"Chapter 1 contains background information on the military justice system as well as the services provided by the Directorate of Defence Counsel Services (DDCS) and the role of DDCS lawyers. Chapter 2 examines the Code of Service Discipline, specifically in relation to summary trials and courts martial. The duties of DDCS lawyers as they relate to defence counsel are detailed in Chapter 3, while Chapter 4 outlines the duties of DDCS lawyers in terms of their advisory role with respect to matters of arrest or detention, election of a mode of trial, assisting officers, and summary investigations and boards of inquiry. Chapters 5 through 8 describe the specific roles of the DDCS lawyer as they relate to lawyer-client relationships, pre-trial matters, the particulars of courts martial, post-trial matters and appeals. Chapter 9 provides general guidelines for dealing with the media, and the final chapter examines other related matters, including arrest, custody, release from custody and fitness to stand trial.
