"Current approaches to economic development are placing more emphasis on the encouragement of entrepreneurship and stimulation of enterprise as a means to achieve self-reliance. In Newfoundland, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as part of a balanced economic development strategy, can play an important role in moving the provincial economy toward this objective. However, one of the key requirements for the development of new and existing SMEs is equity capital.
