Livestock and poultry wastes in the Great Lakes basin : environmental concerns and management issues / G. E. Bangay.: En36-507/15E-PDF

"During the 1960s and 1970s, there has been a growing awareness of the problems created by excessive loadings of nutrients into the Great Lakes. Inputs of nutrients from agricultural activities have been identified as one potential source. In the absence of good quantitative monitoring data on the contributions from livestock and poultry operations, this paper estimates the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen generated from livestock and poultry operations in the Great Lakes basin for the period 1931 to 1971. To make the data more significant from a water quality standpoint, the data have been aggregated on the basis of 17 major drainage basins within the Great Lakes system. Each basin's potential for contributing nutrients from livestock and poultry operations has been evaluated based on the total nutrients available, the physical characteristics of the basin and the changing farming practices found there. Some attempt has also been made to determine which of the basins have the greatest potential for continued expansion of agricultural activity on the basis of soil capability for agriculture"--Abstract.
