      <marc:subfield code="a">"The elements of the hydrological cycle and their interrelationships which are directly influenced by soil and surface drainage improvements are identified. A model of this partial cycle is constructed, permitting the assessment of the effect of drainage improvement on the total discharge from a drained plot for a given precipitation input. Total discharge is composed of surface runoff and drain discharge. Particular emphasis is placed on the soil moisture component, infiltration and percolation to the ground-water table. All components except the unsaturated zone are treated as lumped systems, but the unsaturated zone is represented in the model by a stack of up to 50 layers. The moisture transfer between layers is calculated by a forward finite difference type of calculation based on the physical characteristics of the soil layers. The effect of inhomogeneities in the soil profile on the shape and timing of the discharge is illustrated with a few examples.
