"With exports accounting for more than 30 per cent of Canada's gross domestic product, it is clear that international trade is the lifeblood of the Canadian economy. Most important of all is Canada's trade with the United States, which has steadily increased, in spite of past efforts to diversify our markets, from 66 per cent of total Canadian trade in 1981 to more than 75 per cent today.
