"The analysis of over 60 bottom water samples of the St. Clair River indicates significant sources of several volatile contaminants in the industrial area below Sarnia. In total, 34 different compounds were observed with the method employed, however, only 23 of these have been identified, including chloro-fluoro, and bromo-methane derivatives, and several chlorinated ethanes, ethylenes, propanes, and propenes. The two contaminants perchloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride were found at much higher average concentrations than most others and total loadings of the order of 100 kg.day are indicated. the contaminants are shown to spread slowly through horizontal mixing in the river"--Abstract.
