520 | |a"This report describes sediment quality in the St. Marys River, identified as an Area of Concern (AOC) in 1985 due to water, sediment and biota quality issues. Impairments for the AOC specifically related to sediment contamination include restrictions on fish consumption, degradation of benthos, and restrictions on dredging. The benthic assessment of sediment (BEAST) methodology was applied to 31 sites along the river from Izaak WaltonBay to Little Lake George in the fall of 2002. The BEAST methodology involves the assessment of sediment quality based on multivariate techniques using data on benthic community structure, the functional responses of laboratory organisms in toxicity tests, and the physical and chemical attributes of the sediment and overlying water. Data from St. Marys River sites were compared to biological criteria developed for the Laurentian Great Lakes. Relationships between toxicity and contaminant concentrations were also evaluated by regression analysis"--Summary, p. i. |
