"Traditionally, pharmaceuticals and personal care products have not been viewed as environmental pollutants. However, the potential for these substances to cause a variety of physiological responses in non-target species, has raised concerns for possible impacts on the environment. Although these substances are usually found in very low concentrations in the environment, continuous low dose exposure, especially to sensitive life stages, to these complex mixtures may have significant effects on individuals, populations or ecosystems"--Introduction.
